frequently asked questions
What is a shamanic drum circle?
It’s a gathering of people who come together to create a unified sound through drumming. The rhythmic beat of the shamanic drum can induce altered states of consciousness, facilitating connection with inner wisdom, spirit guides, and the natural world. It’s a space for personal journeying, healing, and community building.
What can I expect to experience during a drum circle?
Experiences vary greatly. Some feel a sense of deep relaxation, others may have vivid inner visions or insights. You might feel a stronger connection to yourself, others, or the earth. Emotions can surface, and the collective energy of the drumming can be powerful and transformative.
Do I need my own drum or any prior experience?
No prior drumming experience is necessary. Beginners are always welcome. If you have a single skin drum or other percussion instrument, feel free to bring it. We often have extra drums and instruments to share. Just bring an open heart and a willingness to participate.
What kind of drums are typically used?
Shamanic frame drums are most common, as their steady, rhythmic beat is conducive to journeying. However, other percussion instruments like rattles, bells, and even other types of drums can contribute to the circle’s sound.
Is the drum circle led or facilitated?
Typically, there will be a facilitator who will open and close the circle, perhaps offer guidance or intentions for the drumming, and ensure a safe and supportive space.
What is "shamanic journeying" and how does the drum support it?
Shamanic journeying is a meditative practice of entering altered states of consciousness to connect with spiritual realms for guidance and healing. The repetitive, consistent beat of the shamanic drum acts as a vehicle to help quiet the mind and enter these states more easily.
Is this a religious practice?
While the roots of shamanic drumming are ancient and often connected to indigenous spiritual practices, our drum circle is generally non-denominational and open to people of all beliefs. The focus is on personal exploration, connection, and healing through sound and community.
What should I bring with me?
You might want a journal to record any insights or experiences afterwards and water to stay hydrated.
